As All School Presidents, Nathalie Fenton and Emmanuel Marmolejo are the foundation of our school’s community. They have worked and collaborated over the past few months to ensure a collective experience of inclusion, support, and fun on campus for students. Get to know Nathalie and Emmanuel, and hear more about their experience in the first months as our presidents!
What inspired you to run for All-School President?
Emmanuel: Someone who inspired me to run for All-School President was Trevor, a senior last year who was head prefect. The way he showed spirit around the school and displayed his kindness was something that resonated with who I am. When he told me I should run for president, I knew that was my sign.
Nathalie: I was also inspired by our head prefects and presidents last year, and aspired to lead like them as a senior. I decided that the role of All-School President would give me the opportunity to contribute to building a community where everyone can feel truly happy, and I wanted to be a part of what they enjoy here.
How has your time as president been so far?
Emmanuel: So far, it’s been great because I get to interact and socialize with so many different people I would have never had the opportunity to if I weren’t All-School President. I’ve formed connections with faculty and people from all grades.
Nathalie: I like working with the rest of the Student Council because it feels very collaborative, and I’ve found that we work well together to advocate for the whole community.` It’s fun to think of what would benefit everyone.
What have been the most enjoyable aspects of this role?
Emmanuel: I really enjoy making decisions for the Sixth Form and meeting with the other Sixth Form leaders. Meeting with Mr. Mulder is always great, and I enjoy sharing my experiences. He often cracks jokes and makes us laugh, so it’s always a good time.
Nathalie: I like working with Eman, Will, and Sophia (Head Prefects) and being a part of what goes on behind the scenes. Being All-School President has given me an excuse to connect with faculty and students on campus with whom I don’t usually interact. I love talking to people, so now I don’t feel weird about going up to people and talking to them because I am their president!
What have been the greatest challenges?
Emmanuel: My biggest challenge is going up on stage. It’s weird because I’ve played soccer in stadiums with thousands of people, but talking to the same 400 people every Tuesday and Thursday still makes me very nervous. It’s slowly getting better as I’m up there more often, and by the end of the year, my goal is to go through a whole all-school meeting without my heart pounding.
Nathalie: It’s hard to focus on just one issue or topic to discuss because there’s so much we want to do with our year. So many people come up to us with their goals for the school year as well, so it’s hard to stay on top of all the things we want to accomplish and make sure that everyone’s voice is heard. This has been a challenge, but I think we have done a good job at managing everything.
