Teachers play an essential role in the lives of students at our school, but how many students know what our teachers are like outside the classroom? That’s why I sat down with Dr. Stetson to talk about his life beyond Berkshire. Through his stories, Dr. Stetson shared a glimpse into his past and what he values most here at our school.
Dr. Stetson grew up in Colorado, and his love for the mountains has made hiking his favorite pastime. Although he hasn’t had many chances to go lately, he also loves fly fishing. At his core, he loves the outdoors and being active. Dr. Stetson also really enjoys reading. “If I have the opportunity to sit during an afternoon with a cup of coffee or tea and a book, I’m happy, ” he says. Alongside teaching, he serves as the JV golf coach—which he loves. Growing up as an athlete, Dr. Stetson developed a passion for sports and states: “Berkshire is kind of the perfect place because I get to work with kids in hockey, and I love the classroom,” He brings both academic and athletic energy to Berkshire,
Dr. Steston also has a close bond with his German Shepherd: Sage. He has a strong connection with German Shepherds because he grew up with one. “My first German shepherd came into my life when I broke my hip at sixteen and was in a body cast. For some reason, I wanted a German Shepherd. I was at a party at a friend’s house where they had two German Shepherd puppies, one of which they were going to give away. When my parents came to pick me up, I had this baby German shepherd in my arms, and I begged them, ‘I broke my hip! You’ve got to let me have this dog,’ and they said okay.” Apache was his dog throughout high school, and they were inseparable.
When asked to describe himself in three words, Dr. Stetson chose “hardworking,” “people-loving,” and “animal-loving”—qualities that are evident in his day-to-day life. Reflecting on his favorite moments at Berkshire, he points to his time in the classroom. “I love being in the classroom and the relationship I have with my students; it’s the same with the hockey team,” he says. He emphasizes how much he values the connection he has with his students, calling it his “favorite part of being here.” He adds, “It keeps me young; it’s fun. We all say that, but the kids here are great—they’re fun.”
When it comes to his greatest accomplishment, Dr. Stetson speaks fondly of his three children. “My stepson Adrian is in his thirties, and I’ve had a wonderful life with him; he’s been great. My son Pratt is playing hockey in Poland right now, and I’m proud of him because he’s playing at a professional level. He’s fighting to be really good, and I respect that he took a very different path. So I’m proud of him and who he has become. My daughter is in her final year at Denver University, and she’s doing really well. She wants to save the world and go to law school. We talk about academics all the time, and I love it; she’s great. I love my kids—they’re awesome.”
Dr. Stetson embodies the values of hard work, passion, and connection both inside and outside the classroom His dedication to his students and his family highlights the importance of relationships and personal growth. As he continues to inspire young minds at Berkshire, it’s clear that Dr. Stetson’s journey is a testament to the impact of educators who not only teach but also share their life stories, enriching the lives of their students along the way. With a deep love for the outdoors, a commitment to his family, and a passion for teaching, Dr. Stetson reminds us all of the profound influence that one person can have on their community.
