When we think of the heartbeat of Berkshire School, it’s easy to focus on the students, teachers, and activities that make our days memorable. But the true backbone of a community is often made up of those who work behind the scenes to ensure our lives run smoothly.
One of these unsung heroes is Shawn Burdick, otherwise known as Mr. Burdick, the dedicated food service director on campus. As he embarks on his tenth year with us, Mr. Burdick shared insights into the heart of his work and his passion for creating a welcoming dining experience.
Since joining Berkshire in 2015, Mr. Burdick has done more than just oversee meals—he’s been a friendly face and listening ear for many Bears who stop by for their favorite meals and friendly conversation.
For Mr. Burdick, it’s these interactions that make his work meaningful. He loves hearing feedback and requests from students, who might ask for everything from adding marshmallows to the hot cocoa bar to suggesting new dinner options. And he does not just listen—he acts.
“Interacting with all the Bears and them telling me what their favorite meals are, what stuff they’d like to see, is my favorite part of the job,” he says, smiling. “ I try to accommodate that.”
This approach has built a bridge of trust and warmth, turning the dining hall into more than just its name; it’s a place where students feel heard and cared for. Mr. Burdick’s dedication reminds us that food service at Berkshire goes beyond providing meals; it’s about nurturing a sense of belonging, comfort, and community.
As we rush through our busy schedules, it’s easy to overlook the contributions of people like Mr. Burdick, who work tirelessly behind the scenes. But taking a moment to appreciate their efforts can remind us of their invaluable role in making Berkshire feel like home.
To honor people like Mr. Burdick, we must recognize that they are shaping the spirit of Berkshire day by day with care, dedication, and thoughtfulness. His commitment to creating a warm inviting environment and his openness to hearing the wishes of every student demonstrate an invaluable kind of leadership.
So, next time you grab a meal in the dining hall, take a moment to say, “Thank you.” Appreciate those who put their heart into making Berkshire a place of warmth and support. In the end, quiet heroes like Mr. Burdick make our community whole, embodying the heart of what it truly means to be a Bear.
