Berkshire Junior Varsity Field Hockey has had an outstanding season this year due to the bonds made and exemplary stick skills. The team’s morale is always high, translating to spectacular communication during games. A key example of this communication is our work during passing sequences. It’s due to these factors that we have had a successful season so far, winning ten out of our thirteen games. Eight of these games were consecutive wins, with our only three losses occurring in the span of our first six games. The girls of JV Field Hockey have taught a masterclass on how to rebound after tough games.
A special game at Taft, one of our rival schools, was a positive turning point. This game provided a surprise for the whole team. Last year, Berkshire JV Field Hockey lost to this team. Considering this, we went into the game with a few nerves, but still ready as always to take on the challenge. Resilience, communication, and sheer talent led to an unexpected win of 5-1. That’s what we call redemption!
During Fall Family Weekend this year, Berkshire fall sports teams took on Canterbury in an intense battle for possession of the Sheehan Cup. The Sheehan Cup was named after Canterbury Headmaster Walter Sheehan. To possess this valuable cup, Berkshire must finish with a winning record against Canterbury. This year, Berkshire finished 9-2 against the Saints. This competition has occurred every year since 1983 and is significant to the history of Berkshire. Our victory was not only driven by stellar performance and synergy on the field but remarkable team spirit and support from our players on the sidelines.
We owe a portion of this credit to our amazing coaches, Ms. Hardcastle and Ms. Perkins. Without the dedication and time they put into our team, whether planning each practice or driving us to our games, we would not be as successful or have the outstanding record that we currently hold. Though we do have this winning streak, the girls on the team continue to put in their best effort each day at practice and strive to meet each game with confidence and aspirations to reach their highest potential. While we have a strong desire to win, we prioritize good sportsmanship and integrity.
Our seniors, Natalie Heldfond ’25, Serena Smallhorn ’25, and Summer Lichtenfeld ’25, embody the characteristics of role models and set an example for the team. Not only is our team connected on the field but off the field as well. Regardless of grade level, whether you are a freshman or a senior, you will without a doubt find a sense of belonging in the JV Field Hockey community.
