Comparing Too Much

From the beginning of time, people have been comparing themselves to others. This simple thought or action is unhealthy and can cause problems at any stage of life. Some people go through such lengths to be just like someone they see in a magazine or on TV that they get plastic surgery or botox done.

People often do not realize that comparison can cause serious harm in the human mind. When comparing yourself to others, you focus on the bad parts of yourself or simply the parts you find average. When doing this you are bringing yourself down and not focusing on what really matters.

Not comparing yourself to others is important because it depletes your mental health and all your energy is put into a mere feature that, most of the time, you cannot change. In the article by HuffPost they talk about how comparing yourself is bad, “Research has found that comparing breeds feelings of envy, low-self confidence, and depression, as well as compromises our ability to trust others.” Just this quote clearly shows that comparing is harmful to self steam.

Say one day you come across an extremely good looking person, they have all the traits you would want: the most amazing hair, how they carry themselves, the smile they have. You start to realize that you are comparing yourself to things that you cannot even change. Most of the things that you compare are genetic and impossible to change without surgery.

Of course sometimes plastic surgery is desirable. We all have different visions of ourselves and that should not be stopped. However, when body shaming, checking yourself in the mirror, cutting down on food, and other unhealthy tendencies starts to occur, that’s when the problem starts.

Just that one interaction can bring down your moral and how you look at yourself. An article FS Blogs titled The Danger of Comparing Yourself to Others sums up that comparing yourself is harmful to your mindset. There is a quote that is incredibly important: “There is one thing that you’re better at than other people: being you. This is the only game you can really win.” This quote is what life is about, you being yourself. If you are not then you can never find your true self.

Reading this you should be asking yourself if you compare yourself to others? Do not be surprised when you find out that you do; we have made it a habit and it is hard to break. At the end of the day you are perfect the way you are and you do not need to change for anyone and anything. Be yourself.
